Solution: The 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' provider is not registered on the local machine - Added on Fri 27 Jan 2012 11:18
At present, I'm working on a program that takes a CSV file, reads the data and does something with the data, at present it's a 64bit solution - in my case it needs to be a 64bit solution due to the solution in question which can't run in 32bit mode

I'm using the Microsoft Jet OLEDB provider because i need to keep it simple, although Microsoft want people to use Jet, Microsoft recommends using Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition or Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition when developing new, non-Microsoft Access applications requiring a relational data store, it's over kill for this solution...

You can get a Jet Like Provider for 64Bit Programs by:

  1. Download Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable (of course you'll need to choose the right bit for your server), and install it on your server
  2. Change your connection string in your code or configuration file from:
    "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;"
    to
    Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;

Getting Session State in HttpHandlers (ASHX files) - Added on Wed 11 Jan 2012 10:58
A reminder to myself and others, when you want to get access to your Session State from an ASHX or HttpHandler, you need to implement IReadOnlySessionState:

Example:
public class DownloadHandler : IHttpHandler, IReadOnlySessionState

The most handy line of code ever!! - Added on Mon 07 Nov 2011 15:45
Okay, so I had a StringCollection for storing a generic collection of words that i had extracted from a XML file that i displayed in a different way on the screen for the end user, then i was asked "Hey, That's cool, but can we have them you know Alphabetical...?"

Now the annoying thing about using the StringCollection is that it doesn't have a sort function.... and the reason i was using the string collection in the first place was that it's the fastest/easiest way to store a collection of strings in .NET!
Then I found the following...

ArrayList.Adapter([name of collection that implements the IList interface]).Sort();

Sorted out my problem right away, call it before you output the contents of the StringCollection in a for each loop

My view on Steve Jobs Passing - Added on Tue 11 Oct 2011 13:46
So I've waited a little while before i wrote this because of a couple of reasons
1) Everyone was so quick to jump on it
2) Because I'm not a huge Apple fan

Steve will always be remembered by the masses for the iPod, iPhone and the iPad, and that to me is sad, Steve Jobs to me was the sort of Boss I want to work for, the visionary sort of guy that makes you stop and pinch yourself every once in a while to make sure you are not dreaming.

The Famous Lyric from My Morning Jacket's Wordless Chorus comes to mind
"We are the innovators. They are the imitators"

Steve and Apple may not have invented the Graphic User Interface Operating System, That honor goes to Xerex and many others but his and Their innovating drive to produce it for the Everyday man in the Macintosh deserves credit - I remember being shown the famous "1984" television commercial which introduced the Apple Macintosh personal computer for the first time about 10/11 years ago now at College and i was still impressed and that was some 15 years late, it just felt that even then they were heading for a brave new world which later fruited as in hindsight, the GUI is what made the industry what it is today...

Thank you Steve

Parents Weekend Madness - Added on Mon 19 Sep 2011 08:40
So the parents are currently visiting and so far we took them to Reading shopping... How my parents are country folk even the nearest big town is pretty small... So imagine taking then shopping around a shopping centre 20 times bigger then their local shopping centre near them (well at least within 50+ miles anyhoo)... Was very funny watching my dads reaction to the size of HMV... Must have been the biggest 'folk' music section he's ever seen...

The misses and smartphones - Added on Tue 06 Sep 2011 08:39
So the future mrs scoins got a smartphone for the first time the other week (a samsung galaxy ace)... I think she likes it... I havent only had the "Pete how do I do this" or "Pete what have I done" a couple of times.... However couple of small issues regarding the hotmail apps is that you cant have more then one account which sucks and the email app although it can handle pop3 it doesnt support the push back of data.. So we have installed three seperate app from the market for her three hotmail accounts... A bit annoying but at least she made it to 21th century

Quake Live - Added on Thu 26 Feb 2009 14:31
You know it's funny, I remember the launch of Quake 3 on PC back in 1999 like clear as day, going down to Lawson's House and being really impressed with the graphics and the speed of the gameplay....and I'm just so amazed how far technology has come in just 10 years, today, in 2009, I'm waiting inline (yeah it sucks) to play Quake Live, the 'Online' Browser version of Quake 3 - Read more about it here

Status Anxiety! - Added on Wed 18 Feb 2009 21:30
Not a lot of people know this but i subscribe to net magazine, it's a techno mag for web people... I especially love this article by Gary Marshall, It appeared in the April 2008 Magazine, here are the bestest bits -

I think I’ve found the flaw in social networking. It’s not the constant parade of nonsense – "You’ve been bitten by a leprechaun! Install the Leprechaun application so we can empty your bank account and defraud your friends!". It’s the fatal combination of lying and avoidance. - Lying is most apparent in status updates. When it says, "Gary is working like a demon", Gary is actually scouring BitTorrent for the latest Girls Aloud video. When it says, "Gary is interviewing", Gary is clearing up the aftermath of an Exorcist-style outbreak of baby vomiting. And when it says, "Gary is really making progress", Gary is banging his head on the desk and shouting, "Why, God? Why?", If we told the truth we’d only need two options, "dicking about on the internet" and "drunk as a lord". Unless of course you’re on MySpace, in which case you’d also need "sucking up to Lily Allen" and "planning a massacre".

Good luck to the Pirate Bay Boys - Added on Mon 16 Feb 2009 23:28
The founders of the website Priate Bay, which carries links to copies of music, films and TV programmes have gone on trial in Sweden on charges of copyright theft. Just want to say Good luck to them, the internet is about freedom... if the Big Music/Film and TV companies where smart enough like 6-7 years ago they wouldn't be in the mess and now, they're placing content online, they want to bitch and moan... get with the program... just my two cents... keep the change

php extensions and mySQL + phpMyAdmin - Added on Wed 11 Feb 2009 17:26
Ok, Not the first time I've come across this interesting error.. Setting up a Web server at work this afternoon and it appears that every time a new version of mySQL comes along and I try and use it, they (the powers that be) haven't updated the php extension to it and I get the following sort of error appear in phpMyAdmin:

"Your PHP MySQL library version x.x.xx differs from your MySQL server version x.x.xx. This may cause unpredictable behaviour."

I have found two possible solutions:
  1. Uninstall new mySQL and PHP, Install older versions! Always Fun!
  2. Do some 'editing' and comment out the message in phpMyAdmin, it's only a unpredictable behaviour that will screw up your system if you do really complex querries...

    In the file: phpMyAdmin/main.php

    Comment out from:

    if (function_exists('PMA_DBI_get_client_info')) {

    To

    unset($_client_info);
    #
    }

    This code is usually found around lines 290 to 315 in phpmyadmin 2.x.x and around lines 394 - 400 in 3.x.x

Hope this helps at least one person! Have fun!
