As the dot-com dust settled, the industry turned its focus toward Web Content Management (WCM), attempting to bridge the gap between static file storage and the burgeoning demand for dynamic websites. This era marked the critical moment when XML finally settled as the universal "lingua franca" of data exchange

Under Construction GIFs and marquees. A world loading one scan-line at a time. Mind the phone line! The onset of the Information Age resembled a slow trickle through a 56k modem rather than a rush. For Digital Asset Management, this was the 'Pre-Historic' phase of the web, where digital assets were typically restricted to low-resolution JPEGs or basic GIFs. This was the era of the Media Bank - a simplified digital filing cabinet focused more on surviving the transfer process than on managing metadata.

16-Bit Sand

Amiga and Atari ST glory. 32 colours on screen. Metadata was just a filename and a prayer.The 'cloud' was just weather. We managed assets through local Bulletin Board Systems and the clatter of floppy disks. If you wanted to share a high-res file, you didn't send a link - you sent a courier.

8-Bit Slate

Load "" — Screeching tapes and attribute clash. The pure, unoptimized grit of the Speccy age. This was the era of the 8-bit home computer - the Commodore 64 and the ZX Spectrum! Where "assets" were stored on standard audio cassettes. Without a network, the only way to share data with your mates was through the mechanical brute force of a double-deck cassette recorder. You’d sit in silence, listening to the high-pitched screech of data being "dubbed" at 1:1 speed, hoping that a stray thumb on the volume dial wouldn't corrupt the entire transfer.

Arcade Metamorphic

Vector graphics and sprite-sheets. Worlds compressed into 16K. Efficiency was the only law.If you wanted to retrieve an asset, you were physically browsing rows of massive open-reel tapes or oversized 8-inch floppy disks. This was the era of the Mainframe, where "digital" meant a green-on-black terminal and a prayer that the magnetic head didn't crash. Metadata was a Dymo label stuck to the side of a plastic tape canister

Mainframe Mantle

Magnetic tape reels the size of dinner plates. Assets were alphanumeric. No room for vibes. Assets lived on 9-track magnetic tapes or stacks of punched cards, where a single dropped tray could mean the permanent loss of an entire database's structure. It was an era of total centralization"integration" was impossible because every system was a bespoke monolith. To find an asset, you didn't query a database; you consulted a printed ledger and asked a technician to physically mount a platter.

The Apollo Core

Punch cards and core memory. One giant leap for man, one tiny bit of memory for the AGC. A New York Times article from January 1970 estimated that there were roughly 60,000 computers installed at the time. The ARPANET, the predecessor to the modern internet, was in its infancy, consisting of only a handful of computers (4 nodes in 1969) - the era of the very first remote logins
